01 · THE CHALLENGE
Deteriorated Tanks Headed for Replacement
The American Cemetery in Manila is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. It holds soldiers who fell in World War II and is of high historic value.
Irrigation water for the cemetery lawn comes from two 400,000 gal reinforced concrete storage tanks. The tanks had deteriorated, and the owner was considering replacing them in kind.
02 · THE SOLUTION
One Layer of Glass FRP on Every Surface
When ABMC learned about QuakeWrap® FRP solutions, it found it could save 75% compared with replacement. QuakeWrap recommended a structural, corrosion-resistant glass FRP lining system, provided specifications and 3D lining details, and supplied the materials. Well-Built installed the lining by wet layup.
The dual-layer laminate, woven glass with a chopped mat, is NSF/ANSI 61 certified and impermeable as well as strong. The QuakeWrap lining details in the case study call for:
- Cracks injected with epoxy before lining
- QuakeBond™ 300SR resin to prime the concrete and saturate the fabric, with QuakeBond™ 220UR as the epoxy adhesive
- One layer of 1,270 mm wide B2610G on the walls (hoop direction), floor, roof, columns and beams
- 150 mm overlaps between strips and where the walls meet the floor and roof
- A 0.5 mm 300SR top coat over the fabric
03 · THE RESULT
75% Savings in a Fraction of the Time
The lining went in within a fraction of the time replacement would have taken. The international project team finished on schedule and within budget, with no significant issues.
ABMC saved 75% compared with replacing the tanks. The case study credits detailed 3D lining details, close collaboration, coordination and crew training.
