SPiRe®+ Seawall Repair System

The Next Generation Solution for Seawall and Bulkhead Rehabilitation

A New Approach to Seawall Repair in the Age of Rising Coastal Demands

Seawalls and bulkheads around the world are under increasing stress due to aging infrastructure, corrosion, and rising sea levels driven by climate change.

Traditional repair methods—such as patching, coating, or full replacement—are often costly, disruptive, and short-lived.

SPiRe®+, developed by QuakeWrap, Inc., is a next-generation seawall repair system that creates a new, durable structural face in front of deteriorated walls—restoring strength, stopping corrosion, and extending service life for decades.

What is SPiRe®+?

SPiRe®+ is an advanced composite panel system that builds upon the proven success of the original SPiRe® (Sheet Pile Repair) technology .

While SPiRe® focused primarily on sheet pile repair, those panels were primarily designed as stay-in-place formwork.  In contrast, SPiRe®+ expands the concept into a complete seawall repair and strengthening solution suitable for a wide range of structures and conditions.

The system uses pultruded FRP panels with integral structural features that:

  • Provide high strength and stiffness
  • Act as stay-in-place formwork
  • Replace traditional reinforcing steel
  • Create a long-lasting, corrosion-resistant barrier
Flexural tests have proven that SPiRe+ panels are equivalent to No. 6 Grade 60 steel bars at a spacing of 3.5 inches

The SPiRe®+ Solution: A Composite Structural Barrier

Most seawall failures are caused by:

  • Corrosion of steel sheet piles or reinforcing steel
  • Loss of soil behind the wall due to leakage
  • Increased loads from higher water levels and storm surges
  • Long-term exposure to harsh marine environments

Conventional repair methods:

  • Do not stop corrosion at its source
  • Require extensive surface preparation
  • Often involve cofferdams and heavy construction
  • Result in high costs and long project durations

The SPiRe®+ Solution: A Composite Structural Barrier

SPiRe®+ transforms a deteriorated seawall into a composite structural system by installing engineered panels in front of the existing wall.

Installation Concept

  1. Panels are positioned in front of the seawall
  2. Panels are anchored mechanically to the existing structure
  3. Panel joints are sealed to create an impervious barrier
  4. The space between panel and wall is filled with grout

The Result

  • A new structural face independent of the deteriorated wall
  • A watertight system that prevents further soil loss
  • A corrosion-resistant barrier that blocks oxygen and moisture
  • A load-sharing composite system that enhances performance

Key Advantages Of SPiRe®+ Seawall Repair

Designed for Seawall Rehabilitation

Unlike systems limited to sheet piles, SPiRe®+ is engineered for full seawall repair, including complex geometries and varying site conditions.

No Need for Full Replacement

  • Eliminates demolition of existing seawall
  • Avoids costly reconstruction
  • Extends service life by decades

Rapid Installation

  • Lightweight panels
  • Minimal heavy equipment
  • Can often be installed without cofferdams

Superior Durability

  • Vinyl ester resin for harsh marine environments
  • Impervious outer surface prevents corrosion
  • Long-term resistance to chemicals and saltwater

Integrated Structural System

  • Acts as formwork, reinforcement, and barrier
  • Eliminates need for conventional rebar in many applications
  • High strength-to-weight ratio
Severely corroded and structurally-compromised seawalls can be restored to their full structural capacity without the need for cofferdams

Applications of SPiRe®+

SPiRe®+ is ideal for a wide range of seawall and waterfront repair projects, including:

  • Steel sheet pile seawalls
  • Concrete seawalls and retaining walls
  • Timber bulkheads
  • Concrete Decks and Girders in Ports and harbors
  • Industrial waterfront facilities
  • Pump stations and marine structures

It is especially effective in environments exposed to:

  • Saltwater and brackish water
  • Tidal fluctuations
  • Storm surge and wave action
  • Industrial and chemical exposure

In addition to marine infrastructure, SPiRe®+ is ideal for repair of corroded slabs in industrial buildings, mines, chemical plants, etc.  Access to these slabs is often limited in such facilities.  The rapid installation of these panels that require virtually no surface preparation offers a significant advantage in such projects.

Similarly, many older slabs in buildings are thin and have low flexural capacity.  When these floors are being retrofitted for increased live load capacity, the use of SPiRe+ panels can make such retrofit projects more efficient and with minimal impact on ductwork and other elements that may be supported below the slab.

From SPiRe® to SPiRe®+: Evolution of a Proven Technology

The original SPiRe® system introduced the concept of using composite sandwich panels for sheet pile repair .

SPiRe®+ builds on that foundation with:

  • Higher structural capacity by including reinforcing elements as T profiles
  • Improved panel connections
  • Greater versatility for seawall applications
  • Faster and more efficient installation

Proven Performance in Demanding Environments

SPiRe® and SPiRe®+ technologies have been successfully used in:

  • Coastal seawalls
  • Industrial facilities
  • Ports and marine terminals
  • Large-scale international projects

These systems have demonstrated:

  • Excellent long-term durability
  • Resistance to corrosion and environmental damage
  • Significant reduction in construction time and cost

The ability to perform the repairs with these products under water without the need for any costly cofferdams significantly reduces the construction time and cost on most marine repair projects.
